A simple recipe for sweet and creamy Homemade White Hot Chocolate that is ready in minutes! See how easy it is in the video below.
We are in full-on Christmas mode around here. Our kids are really into Christmas, and we are having a blast. We’ve been going on walks to see lights, reading holiday books, decorating cookies, writing letters to Santa, and indulging in way too much hot chocolate. It’s so much fun!
Jake and Juliette have been requesting hot chocolate on a daily basis. And although I’d love to give in to their every request for “something warm to drink … that has MARSHMALLOWS!!!”, I’m trying to limit our hot chocolate consumption to a few times per week. Regular Hot Chocolate, Crock Pot Hot Chocolate, and Nutella Hot Chocolate are always favorites, but this year we have been enjoying white hot chocolate. It is so decadent and delicious.
How to Make White Hot Chocolate
This hot chocolate is a cinch to whip up, which means you can make as much or as little as you need. It’s basically three ingredients and one step.
- Heat milk, white chocolate and vanilla extract in a small saucepan. Whisk frequently, to help the chocolate melt. Once the chocolate has melted and the milk is warm – it is done! Add a pinch of salt, if you’d like to balance the sweetness.
Since there are so few ingredients it is important to use good quality white chocolate. I like Guittard or Ghirardelli white chocolate chips, or a chopped Lindt chocolate bar. You can top this hot chocolate with whipped cream, white chocolate chips, or candy canes. Adults could even add a splash of liqueur (yes, please).
I will warn you that this White Hot Chocolate is rich and decadent. This is an every-once-in-a-while treat that my family loves! The combination of sweet white chocolate with warm creamy milk is like a hug in a mug!
And if you’re looking for a way to put a huge smile on the face of a child, just hand them a mug the size of their head filled with white hot chocolate. Happy Holidays!

This recipe is very simple, and works wonders!
But I’ve noticed that, if I leave the cup for a few minutes, it forms a yellowish, thick layer at the top, something like if the chocolate didn’t blend well… Does it make sense? Could it be the chocolate quality, or what?
Thanks!

Hi, Igor. The white chocolate is probably slightly yellow (most are), so as the melted chocolate begins cooling it’s re-solidifying at the top of your cup. As long as you keep it warm it should stay melted and combined. Try warming your mug before adding the hot chocolate to keep it warmer longer. I have made this using Ghirardelli and Guittard white chocolate chips and I haven’t had that problem, maybe try one of those brands?
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by!

Gotcha. The warm mug seems like a great idea. It’s not that bad if I keep a spoon around to stir it, but I was unsure if I was doing something wrong or not.
Thanks for the reply! Your dedication to your recipes seem amazing 🙂

Mine had a THIN coating of the yellow on the top even in the pan. I used a bar of Ghirardelli baking chocolate. I didn’t notice it while drinking it. It was delicious, definitely a keeper!

What Do you do with the leftovers? I’m just number one and soul with 4 cups of milk I’m going to have leftovers how do I store it?
Celebrating Sweets
Hi, Gloria. I would recommend that you scale down the recipe to serve one. It’s easy to do: 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup white chocolate chips, drop of vanilla. You can use the “slider” in my recipe card to change the serving size and it will adjust the quantities accordingly. Enjoy! 🙂

I made Almond milk, Vanilla Extract and Ghiradelli White Chocolate chips. It was creamy, sweet and delicious. Just need to make sure the chocolate melts completely, but if it doesn’t, it is still soft and yummy.

How would this turn out in a crock pot? I’d love to make this for a cookie exchange for about 15 people.
Celebrating Sweets
Hi, Tina. I haven’t tried it, but I would guess that it should work. The key is to keep it warm, but not bubbling. I would recommend making it on the stovetop as directed, then transferring it to a warm slow cooker. Enjoy!

How far ahead can this be made and refrigerated?
Celebrating Sweets
I have never made it ahead, so I can’t say. I’m not sure how the chocolate chips will do since they be melted, then chilled, then melted again. Best of luck playing around with it. Enjoy!
