Get ready to feel like you’ve been transported to an old fashioned ice cream shop. Every sip of this sweet and creamy chocolate malt is filled with nostalgic flavors. With only four ingredients and one step, you are minutes way from whipping up a chocolate malt any time you choose.

We’ve been on a milkshake kick ever since I made this Strawberry Milkshake. When it comes to malt vs milkshake, I ALWAYS choose a malt. Malt powder adds a rich, comforting, extra creamy flavor to any milkshake. If you’re looking to whip up a super easy old fashioned treat, this is it!

What is a malted milkshake?

A malted milkshake is a thick and creamy milkshake that has malt powder added to it.

What does malt powder taste like?

Malted milk powder is not an ingredient that tastes good on its own, but when blended into ice cream it adds an extra creamy, rich, and almost nutty flavor. It pairs best with chocolate or vanilla. If you’ve ever tried a malted milk ball candy (like Whoppers), that is similar to what malt powder tastes like.

Ingredients for a chocolate malt in a blender: ice cream, chocolate sauce, malt powder, milk.

Recipe overview

You only need four ingredients for this recipe:

Ice cream: I use vanilla ice cream, but you can also use chocolate ice cream for a stronger chocolate flavor. Tillamook ice cream is my favorite.

Milk: To help thin out the ice cream a bit and make it drinkable.

Malt powder: I use Carnation brand malt powder.

Chocolate sauce: I use chocolate ice cream topping to add a mild chocolate flavor to the malt.

Place all of the ingredients in a high powdered blender and process until smooth and creamy.

Two glasses filled with chocolate malt topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and chopped malted milk balls.

Serving and storage

Serving: I recommend serving this malt right after blending it, as the consistency should be perfect. Top it with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, if desired.

Storage: Leftovers can be kept in the freezer for up to one week. It will freeze solid, so you’ll need to let it thaw out a bit.
