Who is ready for a Strawberry Margarita? We have roughly 2 weeks until Cinco de Mayo and I’m preparing by eating my weight in chips and salsa and margaritas. If you’d like to join me (hint: you should) this easy and refreshing Strawberry Margarita comes together in minutes. And if strawberries aren’t your thing, I have a Coconut Margarita you can try!

How to make Strawberry Margaritas (frozen or on the rocks)

This easy cocktail is made in a blender. You can make a thick and slushie frozen margarita or you can serve it over ice.

Here’s what you need:

  • Strawberries – fresh or frozen
  • Sugar
  • Tequila
  • Orange Liqueur
  • Orange Juice (regular oranges or blood oranges, pictured)
  • Lime Juice

How to make frozen margaritas

To make frozen margaritas: use frozen (unthawed) strawberries and add a couple cups of crushed ice to the mixture in your blender.

TIP: Since the ice will dilute the frozen margaritas a bit, I recommend adding an extra splash of alcohol. Taste it as you prepare it and adjust accordingly.

Recipe tips

  • The great thing about making your own cocktails is that you can adjust them to suit your tastes. If you want it stronger, add more alcohol. Sweeter? Add more strawberry syrup or orange juice. Use my recipe as a guide to craft your perfect Strawberry Margarita.
  • Don’t forget to add some sugar or salt to the rim of your glass. I love using a mix of both (sweet + salty together is the BEST). Here’s how to do it: Place equal parts sugar and coarse salt on a plate. Run a lime or orange wedge around the rim of an empty glass to moisten it, and then gently twist it in the sugar/salt.
  • I love the color of blood oranges in this cocktail, but you can absolutely use regular oranges and it will taste just as good.
  • This recipe is written to make 4-5 cocktails. You can easily adjust the quantity up or down using the slider in the recipe card.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups chopped strawberries*
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup silver tequila
  • ⅓ cup Grand Marnier or Cointreau
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice, I've used regular oranges and blood oranges
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice, optional

Instructions

On the rocks:

  • Combine strawberries, sugar, and a couple tablespoons of water in a blender and blend until completely smooth. Add a little bit more water, if necessary, to get it smooth (this will depend on how juicy your strawberries are).
  • Place a fine mesh sieve over a large glass measuring cup and pour the mixture through. Lightly press and stir the mixture through the sieve. Discard the solids. You should have around 1-½ cups of strawberry puree; you might not need all of it.
  • Add tequila, Grand Marnier, orange juice, lime juice, and 1 cup strawberry puree to the blender (no need to clean it out) and blend until combined. Taste and adjust ingredients as necessary. Serve in glasses filled with crushed ice.

Frozen:

  • Combine all ingredients along with approximately 2 cups of crushed ice in a blender. Process until smooth. Adjust the thickness by adding more ice. You might need a little bit more alcohol, since the ice will dilute it a bit. Serve immediately.

Notes

*If preparing your margarita on the rocks, use fresh strawberries or thawed frozen strawberries. If using frozen strawberries, I recommend measuring them before thawing.
*If preparing frozen margaritas, use frozen strawberries (still frozen).
Adjust all ingredients to suit your taste. This makes a mildly sweet margarita. If you want it stronger, increase the tequila or orange liqueur. If you want it sweeter, increase the syrup and/or orange juice.
To coat the rim of your glass in sugar or coarse salt: Rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge or a little water. Place salt or sugar on a plate and dip/twist the rim of the glass into the salt or sugar.

It will last for several days in the fridge. I would suggest using it within 1 week.
